The new Opel Astra: its nod to the past and also to the future

In an increasingly competitive segment, where standing out is difficult (even within its own group), the new Opel Astra 2026 does not merely evolve, but commits to building its own narrative through its design. In fact, beyond its technological or mechanical improvements, this compact car stands out for integrating two very specific nods that connect directly with its identity: one that looks back to the brand’s past and another that clearly anticipates its future, and that has already become the present.

This very special launch comes in a key year, as in 2026 they celebrate 90 years of building compact cars. Something few brands can boast about.

A nod to the past: the fin that connects with its history

On the one hand, at the rear we find a seemingly subtle detail, but one full of meaning. It is a small fin integrated into the rear pillar that, far from being a mere aesthetic feature, directly evokes historical models of the German brand. In particular, this element recalls the Opel Kadett of the 1960s, when that kind of shape was common and formed part of its visual personality.

But this decision is no coincidence, as this model is part of a saga with more than 90 years of history in the compact segment. Over the decades, different generations have paved the way, accumulating millions of units sold and consolidating a very recognisable identity. That is why this small nod in the bodywork works as a bridge between generations. We will see whether this is also reflected in sales, as has happened with the new Renault 5.

A nod to the future: the new illuminated Opel Compass

However, if we look at the front, the message changes completely. This is where the Astra projects its vision of the future through the so-called illuminated Opel Compass, a design concept that visually structures the car using two axes—one vertical and one horizontal— that intersect at the centre.

But this is not as new as it seems, since this Astra brings into series production elements seen on the Opel Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo, a prototype that anticipated the brand’s aesthetic direction and already used this “compass” concept as the central axis of its design.

Furthermore, this approach is reinforced by the introduction, for the first time on the Astra, of the illuminated Opel Blitz, located at the centre of the new Vizor, now sharper and more technological, and following the trend of illuminating logos that most brands are adopting.

Beyond design: technology that makes the difference

That said, the new Astra is not limited to its visuals. Alongside this aesthetic evolution, the model introduces significant technological advances that reinforce its positioning within the segment. A good example are the Intelli-Lux HD headlights, which incorporate more than 50,000 pixels and allow high-precision adaptive lighting.

Thanks to this technology, the system can adjust the light beam according to traffic, avoiding dazzling and improving night-time visibility. As a result, not only does safety increase, but also comfort while driving. This is very important in a car of this segment and this price (I’ll reveal it in the last paragraph) because these kinds of innovations usually belong to higher-end cars and brands.

Likewise, the interior has also been revised with a more minimalist and digital approach. The two 10-inch screens stand out, along with a more intuitive interface and the integration of advanced features such as ChatGPT or the Intelli-HUD system, all easy and quick to use, complemented by physical buttons for climate control, volume and direct access to vehicle settings.

A varied mechanical range, including even a diesel

On the other hand, one of the most interesting aspects of the Astra is its wide mechanical offer. Unlike other models that opt for a single solution, Opel maintains a strategy that allows customers to choose different types of propulsion according to their needs.

Thus, the range includes 100% electric, plug-in hybrid, mild hybrid versions and even diesel. The Astra Electric offers up to 454 kilometres of range on the WLTP cycle, together with a 58 kWh battery and competitive charging times. It also incorporates practical features such as the V2L system, which allows external devices to be powered, thus expanding its versatility in everyday use.

Beyond the electric version, there is the mild hybrid option, which develops 145 CV and combines a petrol engine with 48-volt technology, enabling efficient driving without the need for external charging. Above it, the plug-in hybrid reaches 196 CV and improves both its performance and its electric range, thanks to a 17.2 kWh battery that allows up to 82–84 kilometres in 100% electric mode. In addition, it offers outstanding performance within the segment, with an acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds.

Finally, for those who still prioritise efficiency on long journeys, the Astra keeps a diesel option with a 1.5 engine producing 130 CV, capable of combining moderate consumption with good response on the road. With all of this, the range of environmental labels covers C, ECO and 0.

Comfort and practicality without losing your head

Despite this evolution in design and technology, the Astra does not lose sight of one of its fundamental pillars: practicality.

In this regard, the Intelli-Seats, fitted as standard, are designed to improve ergonomics and reduce fatigue on long journeys. In turn, the use of recycled materials in the interior reinforces the brand’s commitment to sustainability.

Finally, in terms of space, the Astra maintains competitive figures within the segment, with up to 1,634 litres of cargo capacity in the Sports Tourer version, making it a valid option both for everyday use and for longer trips.

Price of the Opel Astra 2026 in Spain

As for its market positioning, the new Astra maintains a competitive strategy within the compact segment. Specifically, the recommended retail price for the five-door bodywork in its most basic version starts at 30,250 euros, while the estate variant, the Astra Sports Tourer, starts from 32,350 euros in Edition trim, which becomes the entry level for this bodywork.

If we talk about discounted prices and brand conditions, it can be purchased from 23,500 euros.
