The new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup arrives with a more aggressive look and higher power

The new generation of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is now ready to begin competing in 2021, with improved design, technology and features

Since its debut in 1990, Porsche has made its 911 Cup the most sought-after competition vehicle, and not without reason: since then they have sold 4,251 units, and the ambition of Porsche’s competition department is naturally not to stop here. They now present the latest generation of the 911 GT3 Cup, with which they aim to help themselves reach 5,000 units sold in the coming years.

The new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup will race next year in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup and in the national Carrera Cup series in Germany, France, Asia, Benelux and, for the first time, North America. Taking the current 992 generation as its reference, development began in 2018, and in 2019 work started in a specific direction. The result is a new generation of the 911 GT3 Cup that is positioned not only as a professional competition car, but also will prove even more cost-effective for the teams that decide to buy it.

Aesthetically, the new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is now even more impressive, thanks to a design with greater presence, due to a body that widens at the rear by 28 mm to reach 1,902 mm. It also incorporates elements from the Turbo version for the first time on the GT3 Cup, and a front width that now reaches 1,920 mm. This also results in front fenders that grow in size, allowing 12-inch-wide tyres at the front and 13-inch at the rear, which translates into greater stability and agility.

For this new generation, the body of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup features a higher proportion of aluminium than steel, which means that repair costs for certain elements are reduced, while others such as the bonnet, the doors or the rear wing are also made of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic. In addition, new aerodynamic solutions have been fitted to this body to improve its downforce, such as the combination of a spoiler and a rear wing adjustable in 11 positions, or the front apron, which features a lower lip and a separation edge whose placement was studied thoroughly.

Inside the new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, special attention has also been paid to the ergonomics and comfort of the drivers, with an adjustable steering column and new competition seats that can now be adjusted for height in two positions, allowing any driver to easily find their position. Furthermore, following the drivers’ feedback, Porsche took the opportunity in this new generation to rearrange the steering wheel buttons and the RSP located to the driver’s right. Along with a new 10.3-inch colour screen, this makes data reading simpler for the driver.

Mechanically, the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup continues to use the naturally aspirated six-cylinder flat engine with 4,000 cc, which produces 510 CV together with 470 Nm of torque, coupled to a six-speed sequential gearbox that sends power to the rear wheels. In addition, three exhaust outlet configurations can be chosen depending on the type of competition the car is intended for and the regulations in question.
