The new Volkswagen Tiguan X Coupé, the stylised variant of the 5-seat SUV, is completing its road-testing period before moving on to the production phase

We have been keeping a close eye on the Chinese market for some time, especially regarding new releases from global manufacturers that are setting their sights on the Asian giant as a new priority market. A clientele, often eager to indulge in Western vehicles, for whom the SUV craze is the newcomer car group par excellence.

So, when new models are presented at international or local events, we usually pick them up from European media, since if a model that could be marketed in Europe is presented in China, it is quite possible that both continents will share the same car.

That is why, when we saw the prototype of a new SUV coupé presented by Volkswagen at the 2019 Shanghai International Motor Show, the one heading this article and accompanying this paragraph, we sensed that this model fit perfectly with the new generation of crossovers that adopt a body originally designed for sporty coupés, later for stylised saloons and, finally, for models that evoke the bodywork of classic off-roaders and blend it with an architecture whose aim is to extend the roofline towards the rear as far as possible.

Following the proposal the Volkswagen SUV Coupé made, the production variant based on the Asian sibling of the Volkswagen Tiguan, the Volkswagen Tayron, which gives rise to the stylish crossover Volkswagen Tayron X Coupé, led us to expect the arrival of a new body style for the new Volkswagen Tiguan.

In addition to the body variant, wheelbase and extended occupancy marketed as the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace, the version seating up to 5 occupants but with a tailored rear profile reminiscent of a morning coat, it also seems it will reach Europe.

So we are talking about the Volkswagen Tiguan X Coupé, which would take, at least temporarily, the name of its Asian relative to differentiate it from the standard bodywork and the 7-seat version.

Captured and immortalised in photographs, driving on open road in its pre-production phase, a test unit of the Volkswagen Tiguan X Coupé has been spotted with minimal camouflage livery. A sign that the model is in the stage prior to mass production, something we expect to happen from the end of this year, with sales starting next year.
