The next Nissan Micra will be less conservative

The brand’s chief designer admits that the current generation has not sold well in Europe, and they will transform it into something more in the style of the Juke or Qashqai.

It is clear from the new generation of the Note that the Japanese brand has not forgotten how to turn a product that could easily be bland into something innovative. So with this model in the range, if the current Micra was already less daring than before by nature, now the poor thing stands out more for being too conservative. The intention of Nissan was to make it a global product, which is why it did not take risks with its design.

The problem is that the move has not worked out everywhere. Europe, for example, has responded worse to this generation of the Micra than to the previous one. So the manufacturer is going to stop “drifting” and will do “counter-steering” to get back on the right track, in the words of its chief designer, Shiro Nakamura. The executive confessed this in recent statements to the British magazine Autocar.

The three traits that will define the next Micra aesthetically will be “fun, substance and agility“. Nakamura also stated that they will seek to make the most of the interior space within the compact body dimensions, reaching new heights in the segment. The design chief declared that the brand’s overall design language will increasingly converge with that of the Juke and Qashqai, which, after all, are Nissan’s golden geese in Europe.

Nakamura is aware that this is a very difficult challenge to meet, since Nissan’s product range is extremely varied. The important thing is that they have realised that the relative failure of the current Micra cannot be fully fixed even with a Nismo kit. Perhaps this will also give Mitsubishi ideas. Its new Colt will be less affordable on our continent now that it will no longer be built at its Dutch plant, and the public will not want to pay more for something that lacks the character of its predecessor.
