The Opel Ampera turns two years on the market

Almost two years since it was launched on the European market, the Opel Ampera has covered a total of 100 million kilometres in fully electric mode across all of its European customers. The Opel Ampera is currently in third place among electric car registrations in Europe, with a market share of almost 10%.

Its popularity in certain markets is clear: in addition to being the best-selling electric car in 2012 and Car of the Year, the Opel Ampera is currently in third place among electric car registrations in Europe, with a market share of almost 10%. In the Netherlands the Ampera reaches 40% market share. In Germany, the only major European market for electric cars without incentive programmes, its market share has grown to 10%.

Owners in Europe are confirming their purchase decision, and the Ampera is increasingly driven in fully electric mode. This is reflected in fuel consumption figures. In a study carried out in the Netherlands, drivers achieved consumption figures considerably lower than the combined official figure under European regulations (1.2 L/100 km and 27 g of CO2). There have been cases where 0.5 L/100 km was reached.

The Ampera has also benefited the environment by avoiding the emission of 13,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere over the past two years, compared with the emissions of a conventional car.

So far Opel has sold around 7,700 units of the Ampera. According to the German brand, with the final price reduction in September, orders have nearly doubled. A sign that one of the factors why the electric car has not yet become popular is its high price.
