The Opel Astra GTC now has the 1.6 CDTI engine

The new engine joins the three-door bodystyle range to replace the previous 1.7 CDTI. Compared with it, the power is 6 hp higher and torque rises to 320 Nm, while consumption drops by 0.2 l/100 km and CO2 emissions fall to 109 g/km.

Opel has just announced that the Astra GTC can now be ordered in Spain with the new 1.6 CDTI engine producing 136 CV. Unveiled last year, this powertrain was first integrated into the Zafira Tourer range and in 2014 Opel added it to the Meriva and Astra line-ups in their five-door and Sports Tourer bodystyles. As in those models, the 1.6 CDTI replaces the previous 1.7 CDTI of 130 CV in the Astra GTC.

The new engine not only offers six more horsepower but also 20 Nm more of peak torque compared with the 300 Nm produced by the 1.7 CDTI. Thanks to these gains, the Astra GTC manages to cut its 0-100 km/h time from 10.5 to 10.2 seconds, while its top speed rises from 195 km/h to 198 km/h.

With the 1.6 CDTI, this Astra can accelerate from 80 to 120 km/h in fifth gear in 8.9 seconds. Performance is not the only figure that improves: this engine allows the Astra GTC to use less fuel, as average consumption drops from 4.3 l/100 km with the 1.7 CDTI to 4.1 l/100 km with the 1.6 CDTI.

CO2 emissions are likewise reduced by five grams per kilometre, down to 109 g/km. This is the first engine in the Astra range to comply with Euro 6 emission standards. The starting price of the Astra GTC with this new engine is 24,700 euros, including taxes. Opel has not confirmed which trim levels it is associated with, but the announced price does not differ much from the current price of the Selective, so it is inferred that it can be ordered with the same equipment levels as the 1.7 CDTI.
