The Opel Frontier is coming back, but perhaps not the way you expect

Opel is set to revive the Frontier name, although rather than an off-roader it will be a segment B SUV, carrying on the spirit of the Crossland.

Opel is one of the brands becoming dedicated to electric mobility, so it is expected that in 2024 there will be an electric version of each of its models. The brand has also announced that several of its models will be renewed, such as the Opel Crossland and the Opel Grandland. But although these two models will return with a new generation, one of them may do so under a different name, one taken from the brand’s catalogue in the 90s.

This has been announced by the French publication L’Argus, which claims that in 2024 the Crossland will return, but with a new name. It will be called Opel Frontera, reviving the name of the 90s model. Admittedly, with substantial changes.

The return of the Opel Frontera

This new incarnation of the Opel Frontera will look more like the Citroën C3 Aircross, which you can see in the photos, and will be manufactured alongside that model at the Slovakian plant. This model is designed for the Asian market, but the Crossland will receive modifications to adapt it to European safety regulations. To get around, it will use the brand’s electric motors, the same ones already fitted to the Opel Astra. These are powered by energy stored in a 54 kWh battery, which will give the car a range of up to 400 kilometres.

It is not yet known what image the new Opel Frontera will have, but it is expected to keep the styling of the brand’s latest models, with the design language led by a front end dominated by a blanked-off grille in the case of the electric version. And although we are focusing on this one, it is believed that this model will also be built with combustion engines for certain markets.

In this case, the model could be seen equipped with the 1.2-litre engine with 48-volt mild hybridisation. There may be other engines too, as there is still room for them. Whether combustion or electric, the Opel Frontera will reach the market at the end of 2024, although it will most likely be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in spring 2024.
