The IAA Mobility in Munich recently witnessed an exciting moment in the automotive industry with the world debut of the Opel Astra Sports Tourer Electric. This electric vehicle not only marks a new era for Opel, but also takes the brand’s successful tradition in the compact class to a completely new level. With its bold design, cutting-edge technology and a generous dose of practicality, the Astra Sports Tourer Electric promises not only driving pleasure, but also takes on responsibility for a more sustainable future.

Fifty years ago, Opel wrote the first chapter of its success in the compact class with the iconic Opel Kadett C. This versatile and varied vehicle, which debuted at the end of the 1970s, was presented to the world in a variety of forms: from a clever family estate to an elegant sports coupé. The range of options was wide and appealed to a broad customer base. The Kadett C became a “world car“, produced not only in Germany but also in the United Kingdom, Asia, Australia, and North and South America, adapting to local needs.

In terms of engines, the Kadett C offered a wide variety of options, from efficient 1.2-litre engines to a powerful fuel-injected GT/E model with 105 CV. Opel demonstrated its commitment to safety by equipping the Kadett C with three-point seat belts on the front seats, a significant advance for the time that improved the acceptance of seat belts among drivers.

A key technical innovation of the Kadett C was its double wishbone front suspension with coil springs, which improved the vehicle’s manoeuvrability and active safety. In addition, the Kadett C became the basis for the “OSV 40” safety vehicle, designed to withstand high-speed impacts and prove that passive safety was possible even in compact and lightweight vehicles.

The passion for speed was also in the DNA of the Kadett C, especially with the 1975 Kadett GT/E. This sports car featured a 1.9-litre engine with fuel injection and 105 CV, allowing it to reach a top speed of 184 km/h. Prominent drivers such as Walter Röhrl and Rauno Aaltonen achieved notable successes in competitions such as the Monte Carlo Rally and the Rally of Portugal.

In 1976, Opel offered a completely different driving experience with the Kadett Aero, a unique convertible manufactured by the bodywork specialist Baur. This versatile vehicle combined the feeling of open-air driving with the practicality of a family car and has become a timeless classic that attracts classic car enthusiasts around the world.

Today, Opel continues its legacy of innovation and excitement with the Opel Astra Sports Tourer Electric. This fully electric vehicle features a motor producing 115 kW / 156 CV and a top speed of 170 km/h, surpassing the speed limits of many other electric cars. With a 54 kWh lithium-ion battery that provides a range of up to 413 kilometres according to WLTP, the Astra Sports Tourer Electric combines the best of both worlds: a spacious electric vehicle and a bold design that follows Opel’s tradition in the compact class.
