Confirmed: the BMW M3 will also have a 100% electric version

This model of BMW has become one of the most classic of the Bavarian brand, so it will be the one that kicks off electric mobility in the performance range.

The BMW M3 hit the market in 1983 and since then has been one of the high-performance cars of the Bavarian brand favoured by buyers. And now, as we stand on the threshold of seeing a new generation arrive, BMW has announced that this will be the first model under the M badge to feature an electric powertrain.

The new version of the BMW M3 will be built on the recently unveiled Neue Klasse platform, which has been used to shape the Vision Neue Klasse prototype. With this platform, BMW can begin to explore the possibility of offering M range enthusiasts the chance to enjoy behind the wheel one of the most legendary cars of the brand, but with an electric motor.

One of the things that will be missed in this new version of the BMW M3 will be the sound. This is something that tends to appeal greatly to those who get behind the wheel of this car: a powerful sound that conveys the power delivered by the potent engine under the bonnet. However, it is assured that although the powertrain will not roar as in the combustion-engined versions, the sense of power will be the same as in those.

With the new platform, the new BMW M3 will have the option of using four electric motors, one on each wheel, so the model will be able to use either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. And although the future BMW M3 will have nothing to envy in the combustion-engined versions, there may be people who want to stick with that type of engine.

So the brand has wanted to point out that it will also be available with a combustion engine. The combustion engine is expected to remain the 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder block, adapted to comply with the Euro 7 standard. The new generation of the BMW 3 Series could arrive in 2027, so that will be the moment when the combustion-engined BMW M3 will coexist with a fully electric version.
