The Rivian R1S will reach its customers starting in August

Rivian is a new company. An electric vehicle manufacturer that is preparing original models and offers two entry-level models. The Rivian R1T, the company’s pick-up, is already reaching its first buyers, and within a few weeks it will begin delivering the first units of the R1S, which is the manufacturer’s SUV version.

The numbers seem to be starting to favor the American company, which has seen its situation improve since deliveries of its electric pick-up began. Production of the company’s two models has increased considerably over these months, and this has been a boost for the company.

The R1S electric SUV

Before beginning deliveries of the SUV, Rivian has already built several units. These have gone into the hands of company employees and have not been delivered to any of its customers. This first phase of deliveries appears to be over, and now it will be the buyers who begin collecting their vehicles and driving them, after encountering several problems during the production phase.

Rivian claims 90,000 reservations, a figure that adds together orders for the R1T and the R1S. A figure that has given the start-up more than a headache, as it has struggled to meet a demand for which it was not prepared.

In the United States, the R1S SUV has a selling price of $85,575. From 2024 onward the company will present new versions, more affordable and with limitations in both power and range, but at lower prices. At the moment, it is an electric SUV with seven seats, a very appealing alternative at a time when this type of SUV is becoming increasingly popular.

This model’s range exceeds 500 kilometers and it is powered by four motors, one at each wheel. These deliver a combined output of 600 kW, equivalent to 804 CV. Its battery achieves a range of up to 200 kilometers with a 20-minute charge at an ultra-fast charging station using direct current.

Production forecasts

Rivian expects that throughout 2022 around 25,000 units will leave the Normal (Illinois) plant. This figure will include both models, the R1S and the R1T, but also the first units of the electric van the company has designed for use by Amazon.
