The second generation of Formula E electric single-seaters arrives
The Formula E organisation has unveiled the new electric single-seaters that will take part in the competition from the 2018/19 season onwards, with changes

The Formula E cars are being redesigned using the latest advances in electric mobility, so it is time to see how the second-generation vehicles, the ones that will replace the current ones, arrive on track. It will be at the Geneva Motor Show that we will see these new electric single-seaters in detail, but we can already see some first images of the models that will soon run on tracks around the world. These images show an impressive car, at least aesthetically and mechanically; it will, we hope, be even more striking.
The car has not yet been seen in person, since it will not be shown until the Geneva Motor Show, which opens its doors in a few weeks. But these images show a car very different from the current ones. The company that obtained the licence to build this second generation is Spark Racing Technologies, which, alongside other companies that wanted to be chosen, will put the car on the asphalt.

The technology has changed and the cars’ characteristics have changed too, since they will use batteries from McLaren Applied Technologies, which has supplied a battery reaching 250 kW that will allow the cars to reach 300 km/h, which is what racing demands: speed and power. Aerodynamics have been improved aesthetically, with the striking V-shaped rear wing standing out. This already marks an important difference from the current cars, although there are further details that set it apart from today’s single-seaters.
The changes are driven by the need to reduce air resistance, the opposite of what happens with Formula 1 cars, where in the case of the rear wing the rear-end aerodynamic downforce must be increased. The surface kept clear of obstacles extends to the large rear diffuser, and the wheels have been covered on their upper part. In addition, the driver is protected by a safety halo and, as a styling element, it incorporates blue LED lights framing the driver’s cockpit.

According to Alejandro Agag, the director of Formula E, this car will be much faster, with more range and more power. This will radically change the characteristics of the competition and bring new elements to consider to make it even more impressive. We will have more details at the Geneva Motor Show, which promises to bring very interesting things.
