The Skoda Scala and the Skoda Kamiq will get a new 1.5 TSI petrol engine with Active Cylinder technology.

Skoda has expanded the Scala and Kamiq families with the introduction of a new petrol engine, which is shared with a multitude of vehicles built under the roof of the Volkswagen Group.

This new 1.5-litre TSI unit delivers 150 CV-110 kW and a maximum torque of 250 Nm and can be combined with a six-speed manual gearbox or an optional seven-speed automatic gearbox.

The powertrain comes with Active Cylinder technology, a system that shuts off two of the four cylinders to reduce fuel consumption, while the particulate filter keeps emissions under control. According to Skoda, combined fuel consumption ranges between 5.4 and 6.7 l/100 km with the manual gearbox, and 5.7–6.5 l/100 km with the automatic. CO2 emissions range from 122–152 and 130–148 g/km, respectively.

The Skoda small SUV can be ordered with the optional chassis control system, which provides two suspension settings, and will soon be launched with another powertrain: a 1.0-litre G-TEC that runs on compressed natural gas (CNG) and offers a modest 90 CV (89 hp / 66 kW). This will increase the number of powertrains available for the Kamiq to five, all of which feature technologies such as start/stop and brake energy recovery, and comply with the Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard.

The chassis control system is also available for the Scala hatchback, which reduces ground clearance by 15 mm and offers two suspension settings.

At 4.36 metres long, the Skoda Scala is among the largest cars in its class. Its width is 1.79 metres, and its height is 1.47 m. The body conceals the Volkswagen Group’s modular MQB A0 platform. This means it is the platform used by “small” cars, such as the SEAT Ibiza or the Volkswagen Polo, not the one used by the SEAT León or the Volkswagen Golf.

Overall, the design is pleasant and modern, with more rounded lines than the brand had accustomed us to. A distinctive styling detail is the enlarged rear window, although it will not be standard on all versions. The drag coefficient is 0.29.

The wheelbase is 2,649 millimetres. According to Skoda, this allows the Scala to offer rear-seat space equivalent to that of the Skoda Octavia. We will check this soon, but we believe it, as Skoda models normally stand out for their excellent use of interior space.

It also boasts the largest boot in its class, with a capacity of 467 litres, which rises to 1,410 with the rear seats folded down. Another novelty of the Scala is the option of a fully electric tailgate.
