The Tesla Model 3 becomes the best-selling electric car in history

The electric car market has changed radically and the best-selling car of all has stopped being the Nissan LEAF. The Japanese proposal was for many years the choice of a larger number of electric car users, but in recent months the situation has changed and we have found that it has been replaced by another electric vehicle, the Tesla Model 3.

We already saw that during 2019 the best-selling electric car was already the Tesla Model 3, ranking above the Nissan LEAF. This seemed to be a trend that would repeat month after month, although the surprise came when the data confirmed that the success of the Tesla Model 3 goes beyond a sales record for last year.

Tesla Model 3, the best-seller

The Nissan LEAF appeared on the American and Japanese markets in 2010, so it already has 10 years of history. Throughout that time it has sold approximately 490,000 units, a figure that is not bad at all. For many years it was the preferred option of users of this type of zero-emission vehicles.

It was from 2014 onwards, the year in which some improvements were made to the model and its price was lowered, that the Nissan LEAF became popular. At that point the sales climb of the Japanese car began and it moved up to first place in international sales.

By contrast, the Tesla Model 3 reached the market in 2018, although it was from the second quarter of that year that the broader production began of the American model. In just two and a half years it has accumulated sales of 536,000 units, according to Bloomberg.

This means not only that it surpasses the popular Nissan LEAF in annual sales, but that in just those two and a half years it has managed to exceed the total number of units sold by this one. This offers interesting figures, since it shows that electric cars are being well received and little by little are carving out a place in the international market.

The figures for both models are not expected to fall, according to forecasts, although the start-up of the Tesla factory in China in 2021 could keep the growth trend of the Model 3 rising above any other model. The third place in this ranking of best-selling electric cars is the Tesla Model S, although its pull is less than the brand’s other model.

What does the future hold for this type of vehicle? Everything is uncertain, since it depends on the arrival of other Tesla models and the proposals for affordable electric cars that will appear shortly may impose new variables in this equation.
