The Tesla Model Y could reach the market during the summer of next year, 2020, thus moving ahead of the planned date, as Elon Musk has assured.

Elon Musk’s company has announced that it could start production of the Tesla Model Y a little earlier than expected. When the electric car manufacturer presented the Tesla Model Y earlier this year, it promised to begin production in autumn 2020. That date has now been brought forward to next summer.

“The installation of the equipment for the Tesla Model Y is underway ahead of the planned launch next year. We are moving faster than initially planned, using the learnings and efficiencies gained from our factory design called Gigafactory Shanghai,” the brand explained in a statement.

Production of the Tesla Model Y will initially take place on a fifth assembly line at the manufacturer’s factory in Fremont, California. At a later date, it will also be built at the new Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, China. Prototypes of the Tesla Model Y have recently been spotted being filmed in the United States and Canada.

In addition to announcing that the Tesla Model Y will arrive earlier than expected, the electric car brand also announced that during the third quarter of 2019 it posted revenue of 6.3 billion dollars, an increase of 383 million dollars in cash and cash equivalents to 5.3 billion dollars. Test production of the Tesla Model 3 has also begun at the new Gigafactory 3.

These figures match the record deliveries and production achieved, with 96,000 vehicles manufactured and 97,000 units delivered. A rise in these figures is mainly due to the warm reception of the Tesla Model 3, the brand’s most affordable car, which established itself as the best-selling model worldwide.

Tesla also says it is in the final selection process to choose a location for a Gigafactory in Europe. This facility will join the Fremont and Shanghai factories in building both the Tesla Model 3 and the Tesla Model Y, with production starting in 2021. Finally, the electric car manufacturer also plans to build “limited volumes” of the Tesla Semi truck in 2020.

What is the Tesla Model Y like?

The Tesla Model Y is the new member of Elon Musk’s company’s family of electric cars. This model will become the entry-level crossover in the range of the American brand. It is worth mentioning that this crossover will share up to 75% of the components fitted to the current Tesla Model 3.

The new electric SUV from Tesla will be available in five- and seven-seat versions. In addition, drivers will be able to choose from four options called: Standard Range RWD, rear-wheel drive RWD, Long Range and Performance, with all-wheel drive.

The fully electric range is between 505 and 540 kilometres according to the WLTP homologation cycle. It is worth highlighting that in our country it can already be reserved with a starting price of around 59,000 euros.

The first versions to reach the market will be those combining five seats with the Long Range rear-wheel drive. Those interested in the Standard Range option, however, will have to keep waiting until 2022, as the brand itself confirms.
