The Tesla X Crossover finally unveiled

Tesla Motors has just unveiled the Tesla X Crossover, a fully electric, seven-seat model with novel “falcon” wing doors.

Finally, the moment has arrived and we are face to face with the Tesla X Crossover, a project long cherished by Elon Musk and Tesla Motors: the first fully electric crossover. Some of its theoretical claims regarding capacity and accessibility may be open to debate, but its overall result is a model that, in my view, is very well executed.

The Tesla X uses the same architecture as the Tesla S, with a slightly longer wheelbase that gives the batteries more room to be housed. Technically it would use the same electric motors as the S, although the batteries will have greater capacity; specifically, the plan is to fit 60 and 85 kWh batteries, which would give it a range even slightly lower than that of the Tesla S. It should be noted that this unusual crossover weighs roughly 2,100 kilos.

Among other finishing touches, the X model will feature a kind of torque distribution system, simply by activating or deactivating the rear or front motor, along with a regenerative system that will be available. The announced performance is 4.4 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h, all at a price roughly equivalent to that of the Tesla S: about 50,000 dollars after accounting for subsidies from the Obama government.

What is curious about the Tesla X are the gull-wing doors, which Tesla calls falcon-style doors. These doors are nothing more than gull wings hinged in two parts. Access to the vehicle is greatly improved, bearing in mind that the X will carry no fewer than seven passengers when it goes into production early next year.
