The third generation of the Mercedes CLS will arrive in Spain with two six-cylinder engines and a special launch edition

In addition to two six-cylinder engine options, buyers of the third generation Mercedes CLS will be able to opt for a special edition

We have been reading about the launch of the third generation of the Mercedes CLS, a model from the German brand that has been on the market since 2003 and that will bring us a new, updated version of the coupé-style saloon. The main difference in this version lies in the front grille, which dominates the forward-sloping nose. The headlights also give it an interesting look, and at the rear the light cluster is also different and more striking. As for the overall design, the intention has been to pay tribute to the very first version of the model, honouring that original CLS, which has now reached its fifteenth year on the market.

Its physical appearance is not the only attraction of getting behind the wheel of one of these coupés with a saloon spirit. The mechanical and technological equipment is also one of the model’s strong points: it has been fitted with the latest technology to deliver optimal driving performance and very appealing handling for anyone who wants to take the wheel. The driver assistance systems are inherited from the S-Class, so the car comes with a comprehensive package of this kind of technology, which considerably increases the safety of the driver and the vehicle’s occupants.

These systems include lane change control, for which you only need to activate the indicator and the system takes care of the manoeuvre safely, detecting vehicles approaching from behind and their speed, for example. In addition, the new Mercedes CLS includes the PRE-SAFE PLUS system, which helps maintain safety in the event of a side impact. When one of these impacts occurs, it moves the occupants of the front seats towards the centre, reducing the severity of the impact.

The camera and sensor system allows the car to be aware of the traffic around it and to determine possible risks for the driver. In addition to all the technology found in the cabin, the driver can choose between three driving modes: Comfort, Sport and Sport +, and can opt for an improved air suspension system among the optional packages.

Turning to the engines, two versions will initially arrive in Spain. The CLS 350 d 4MATIC will have an output of 286 CV and a maximum torque of 600 Nm, with a combined fuel consumption of 5.6 l/100 km and combined CO2 emissions of 148 g/km, and the CLS 450 4MATIC, which increases output to 367 CV, with a combined fuel consumption of 7.8 l/100 km and combined CO2 emissions of 178 g/km. Both engines will be six-cylinder units, although four-cylinder engines will reach the market at the end of the year.

Those who want greater performance in terms of equipment can choose the Edition 1. This special launch edition will be available for one year after the model goes on sale. In addition to the elements that identify it as part of this special edition, it features superior equipment, which makes it an even more remarkable car. We do not yet know the final price of this version, however. We hope it will be announced soon, because there are surely many enthusiasts of the Mercedes waiting for that figure.
