The Toyota Corolla Trek joins the British police with a version prepared for service

The British headquarters of Toyota has developed a modified version of the Toyota Corolla Trek intended for use by Derbyshire Police. To prepare it, the force’s officers contributed by testing the model before its introduction and offered a list of modifications to make it more efficient.

The Corolla Trek is already a version designed for more active use, far removed from the calm of everyday city driving. To begin with, compared with the standard version, it sits 20 mm higher off the ground. It has underbody protection and several additional protective elements on the bodywork.

But since police vehicles sometimes have to perform more demanding manoeuvres, this vehicle has been fitted with an off-road driving system that allows it to move with greater freedom. And that is without four-wheel drive, as this is a front-wheel-drive vehicle.

Other modifications and additions include a satellite navigation system, parking sensors, a dog transport area and a spare wheel alongside the tyre, to guarantee the vehicle’s functionality even in the event of an accident that damages its structure.

As for the drivetrain, no improvements have been made. As standard, the Toyota Corolla Trek is fitted with a hybrid system with a 2.0-litre engine delivering 120 CV, enough to fulfil its policing role. The model has been finished in police livery and will undergo a trial period.

The introduction of a hybrid vehicle for policing duties is part of the measures taken by the British police to gradually replace petrol and diesel models in their fleets, until their vehicles are fully electrified.
