The Volvo XC40 receives a new 3-cylinder engine and the new Inscription trim level
The new Volvo XC40 continues to expand its range with the arrival of a new entry-level petrol engine, as well as additional versions and equipment

From the moment it was unveiled, the Volvo XC40 already began to enjoy a certain success even before sales started, and it’s no surprise: with its fresher design, more youthful than elegant, the Swedish brand’s new entry-level SUV has all the ingredients to become a true hit. But despite being a premium model, one drawback of the XC40 was the lack of entry-level engines in the range, something Volvo intends to remedy as soon as possible.
The new option Volvo offers to power the new XC40 is the new 1,500 cc three-cylinder petrol engine, which will be the first three-cylinder engine in the brand’s 91-year history. This engine is based on the Drive-E block from Volvo. It uses the same modular design approach as its four-cylinder engines, and its layout also allows it to be fitted to the Volvo Twin Engine hybrid models.

That said, many details still remain to be revealed about this new engine. Volvo has not yet disclosed its performance, consumption and emissions figures or, equally important, its price, although it is confirmed that it will undercut the 42,723 euro starting price of the current D4 engine. What we do know is that it will be paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, although an eight-speed automatic will also be offered next year.
But Volvo’s news for the XC40 doesn’t end with a new engine, as future owners will also be able to choose a new trim level and equipment. For now, when buying our Volvo XC40 we can only choose between the basic Momentum version and the R-Design version, the latter with a sportier look and more equipment than the former.

We can now choose a new equipment level called Inscription, a version oriented towards a more luxurious and elegant side. In the Inscription version we can choose from new 18, 19 or 20-inch wheel designs, chrome door frames and front grille, and new exclusive exterior colours. Inside we find a new crystal gear-lever knob, an element first presented exclusively on the new XC60.
We can also say that new accessories will arrive to further personalise our new Volvo XC40, with elements such as the 21-inch Black Diamond Cut wheels or the integrated dual exhaust outlets.
