The Worst Euro NCAP Cars of 2019

The year closes with one of the most positive balances in terms of safety offered by new cars, but this does not mean there are no results that allow us to draw up a ranking of the worst Euro NCAP cars

As is already tradition at Top10Motor, during 2019 we have gathered the results of the Euro NCAP tests, the safety tests carried out by the body associated with the European Union, which show the level of safety of new cars sold on the old continent.

Overall, the year that is coming to an end has been one of the most satisfactory in terms of the evaluations of the cars that have passed through the Euro NCAP facilities, but we cannot ignore that some of the cars that have been subjected to crash tests and to tests of the new technologies that reduce accidents and promote safety have obtained scores below the rest.

That is why we can highlight a handful of vehicles as the five worst Euro NCAP cars of 2019.

Indeed, despite this Chinese electric SUV having been approved for sale in Europe for meeting the minimum requirements in terms of safety and other common standards, it is the worst performer in the Euro NCAP tests in 2019.

With the lowest percentages of points obtained in all categories, it scores only 3 stars, which cannot make up for or compensate for the absence of safety features, especially as far as the rear seats are concerned.

Volkswagen e-up!

In fact, the three-star rating given by Euro NCAP to the Volkswagen e-up! extends to its twin, the Czech Skoda Citigoe iV, and to “our own” Seat Mii Electric, since they are practically identical cars in terms of structure and cabin.

Besides the low score, for these 2019 models it represents a step backwards in terms of protection levels shown previously, since the 2011 versions achieved 5 stars in the tests at the time.

Jeep Renegade

The smallest of the Jeep SUVs has the drawback of being the car with the lowest score in 2019 in the safety tests.

With three stars, the 2018 Jeep Renegade obtains low scores in terms of safety for occupants, both adults, with 82 percent of the possible points achieved, and children, with 84, but it is with regard to pedestrians that it achieved only 55 percent of the possible points. Nor can it boast about driver assistance and safety systems, as it reached 58% of the available score.

Jeep Cherokee

But its brother, despite achieving 4 Euro NCAP stars, does not significantly improve either occupant safety, with 80 percent of the points achieved for adults and 78 for children, nor pedestrian protection, 56 percent. It only obtains a better percentage with regard to driver assistance and safety systems, which rises to 69 percent of the points.

DS 3 Crossback

The model that evolved from a city car into a compact SUV has not improved in protecting the people it interacts with, since, according to the Euro NCAP tests, the DS 3 Crossback only achieved 56 percent of the possible score for pedestrian vulnerability, which penalises this car to a total of 4 stars, making it the third-worst performer of 2019.

Volkswagen Sharan

If MPVs are at their lowest point, it is not because of the results of the impact tests, but there is no doubt that anyone who wants to transport a family in one of these vehicles should be concerned about the level of safety that would apply both to its occupants and to those around this MPV.

Well, while for adult occupants the Volkswagen Sharan obtains a score of 89% of the possible points, for children it only achieves 78 percent, but even worse, 56% of the points for pedestrian protection and 62 for driver assistance and safety systems.

These results, according to Euro NCAP, can be extrapolated to the Seat Alhambra, since they share the same construction platform. These are twin brothers that have, offer and suffer the same characteristics, for better or worse, and therefore they receive the same results.
