A Mercedes-AMG GT hybrid could be on the way

Mercedes-AMG is developing a new variant of the four-door AMG GT that could make use of hybrid technology.

Electric powertrains appearing in sports-oriented vehicles is nothing new, but high-performance saloons that rely on this type of mobility are . Brands such as Porsche have already made their clear intention to embrace this combination and, although everything pointed to Audi being the next to give in, it seems Mercedes wants to take the lead. The house of the star has wanted to make use of the final stretch of 2019 to share a very exciting video as a token of gratitude, but what we did not expect is that they would unveil a teaser of a possible future model.

For a long time, our expectations were sky-high due to rumours suggesting that Mercedes-AMG was developing a four-door variant of its quintessential supercar. A few months later, we met this new offshoot at the Geneva Motor Show under the name Mercedes-AMG GT 63s, a model set to accommodate more variants.

Now the rumours are once again in full swing, fuelled by a mysterious AMG GT that appears under camouflage at the end of this video. Many suggest it is the most radical version of chassis 73, but the sudden, deafening silence just as it makes its appearance leads us to believe we are looking at a 100% electric or plug-in hybrid variant.

And it is that Mercedes-AMG has for some time been using a mild-hybrid system to bring to life the 53 variants of its most exuberant models, so it would not be far-fetched to expect a deeper development of this technology. With this premise, the company’s sports saloon could be the ideal guinea pig to present a conventional hybrid system capable of carrying more power.

The mechanical layout of this possible Mercedes-AMG GT hybrid could be built around the already well-known 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 and a second electric motor capable of offering a range in EV mode of approximately 50 kilometres. However, the most impressive aspect of this new hybrid heart would be the combined power output, which could rise to as much as 750 CV.

This is how Mercedes-AMG intends to gradually introduce us to a range of vehicles ready to rely on electricity as a source of life. At the same time, the German firm will pit this new variant against the Porsche Taycan as well as the Panamera Turbo S e-Hybrid, two of its main rivals.
