This is how different the new Audi RS6 sounds compared to its predecessor: why?

The new Audi RS6 features a particulate filter that makes its sound less aggressive than that of its predecessor, and here is the irrefutable proof.

The automotive sector faced fierce competition at home a few years ago: companies dedicated to modifications. Many owners of sports cars turned to them to get more out of their engine or simply to improve its looks. The brands, aware of the problem posed by the success of this industry, decided to cut things short and began offering optional parts capable of modifying the styling of their most flamboyant models, their top speed or their sound.

After all, a good soundtrack in a sports car is an essential element that makes the experience behind the wheel much more rewarding. Brands such as Audi began to reach acoustic perfection thanks to models like the R8, the RS3 and the colossal previous-generation RS6, a model that could be optionally fitted with exhausts signed by Akrapovič.

With the latest generation of the four-ring estate already on the market, many of us were eager to learn every detail of its future performance variant. It was at the last Frankfurt Motor Show that Audi unveiled the new RS6, a vehicle that improves on its predecessor in every way but loses one element that served as its trademark: its sound.

Today we bring you a video in which, in addition to hearing other vehicles of similar stature revving their engines, we can distinguish the differences between the sound of the current RS6 and the previous one. Following the tightening of strict anti-pollution regulations, many brands have had to “defang” some aspects of their most radical vehicles, with sound being one of them.

It is true that the new Audi RS6 uses a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 capable of producing 600 CV and 800 Nm of torque, figures that do no dishonour to the illustrious name it carries. However, the rev limiter at standstill and the particulate filter it fits, designed to reduce emissions, cause its characterful sound to be diminished by these two elements. Fortunately, it is on the move that the Audi estate shows off its philharmonic side.

With this in mind, we find a Audi RS6 that is somewhat poorer in sonority, but more radical and up to expectations. Nevertheless, for those fortunate owners who miss a bolder soundtrack, they can always turn to aftermarket companies, which are already developing modifications for the new Audi RS6.
