This is how the SCG 004S passes a safety test without needing airbags

The SCG 004S supercar has undergone a safety test without airbags and has passed it successfully.

Modern cars are safer than ever, with all kinds of technologies to prevent accidents and minimise injuries to occupants if they do occur. However, the company, Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus, has improved its safety and taken things to the next level, as its supercar SCG 004S has recently passed side-impact tests without the need for side airbags.

The test it passed was the 51 km/h moving/deformable barrier test, which involves driving a “bullet” vehicle into the side of the car at 51 km/h. The bullet vehicle is fitted with a deformable barrier on its front, designed to simulate a side impact on the cabin when it collides with the car. And as mentioned above, the 004S passed this test without airbags, which is no easy task for any car manufacturer, let alone a small team like SCG.

It is especially difficult because, unlike a frontal impact, in which the engine bay acts as a crumple zone before the force reaches the cabin, the side does not, so it must be able to deform enough to absorb the impact while remaining rigid enough. This is even more crucial when airbags are removed from the equation, which means SCG must have done a good job to get the vehicle’s crash structures to that level of protection.

SCG believes it is the only car manufacturer in history to pass the 51 km/h moving/deformable barrier test without a single airbag. The car is obviously completely battered, but that is exactly the point. The bodywork is meant to take the brunt of the damage, leaving the cabin completely intact to keep the occupants safe.
