This is how the Toyota Mirai will go on sale in Spain from this year, 2020
The new Toyota Mirai, the hydrogen fuel cell car that the Japanese brand presented as a prototype, will finally go on sale in Spain
Toyota has presented the definitive version of the second generation of what is set to be its alternative approach to fuels of the new era.
From the outset, the successor to the current Toyota Mirai was unveiled as a prototype, a Toyota Mirai Seda Concept that already hinted at a design that could well have been the production vehicle, and as it turns out, that is exactly what it has become.
From prototype to production car
From the outset, this vehicle measures 4,973 mm in length, 1,885 mm in width, 1,468 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,918 millimetres. It seats up to 5 people, a size very similar to the Toyota Camry Hybrid we tested, and it could be the option halfway between traditional powertrains and cars with electric motors and batteries.
Clearly inspired by the brand’s models and its sister models, such as the Lexus ES, with which the Camry itself shares its construction platform, the new Toyota Mirai shows a visual language reminiscent of the models mentioned, but it differs completely from the original thanks to much smoother, more stylised, elongated lines, dispensing with the angular and incisive edges with which the previous FCEV, Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle, or hydrogen fuel cell car was designed.
Because the car we are showing is an electric vehicle that uses a hydrogen storage tank, which is converted into electrical energy. In fact, according to the manufacturer’s information, the new Toyota Mirai will have a range 30 percent greater than the current model, that is, more than 600 km.
On the other hand, refilling the hydrogen tank in the fuel cell would take around 5 minutes, a procedure, that of hydrogen refuelling in a fuel cell car, which we have already explained in our tutorial on the subject.
Finally, on sale in Spain
And, although in the final years of the first generation a dozen Toyota Mirai 2016s were registered in Spain for promotional purposes, the new-generation model will arrive on the European market through regular channels and, consequently, in Spain.
This has been confirmed by the manufacturer, which has indicated, without specifying, that the new Toyota Mirai will begin sales in the old continent at the end of this year.
The price of the new Toyota Mirai has not been disclosed either, but it is quite likely to be similar to that of direct rivals such as the Hyundai Nexo.
