Toyota debuts the second unit within a new series of turbocharged engines, which improves both thermal efficiency by 36 % and fuel consumption. The new 8NR-FTS turbo engine with direct petrol injection and 1.2 litres delivering 116 CV of power, will be available as an option on the new and redesigned Auris that has already gone on sale in Japan.

This new powerplant is the culmination of years of development by Toyota engineers, who have achieved notable advances in combustion technologies and loss reduction, which, according to internal data, delivers exceptional performance.

As for the more technical side of the new engine, the single-inlet turbocharger is combined with a cylinder head that uses an integrated water-cooled exhaust manifold. This optimises exhaust temperature and also achieves adaptive intake that is not affected by the engine’s thermal load. It also provides better acceleration response and maximum torque over a wide range of revs.

With the advanced D-T4 technology, a four-stroke petrol engine with direct injection and turbo, optimal results are achieved in terms of the ideal air-fuel mixture. Another area that has been improved is combustion speed. Toyota has done this by creating a vertical tumble swirl inside the cylinder.

The continuously variable intake valve timing (VVT-iW), allows the engine to operate adjusting valve timing according to load at the point where the combustion cycle increases thermal efficiency, reaching an expansion ratio higher than the compression ratio, which improves fuel efficiency (Atkinson cycle).

Toyota’s commitment to conventional engines remains in place, since they account for the largest number of sales, despite the success achieved with the more environmentally friendly hybrid engines that are more fuel-efficient.
