Toyota Hilux Hybrid, the legendary Japanese pick-up gets electrified with mild-hybrid technology

Launched in 1968, the Toyota Hilux has become an emblematic vehicle and one of the most recognised pick-ups in the world. The brand has sold more than 21 million units of the Hilux, which is currently sold in over 180 countries worldwide. This commercial success is also backed up by motorsport, with three victories at the Dakar Rally and two more at the FIA World Rally-Raid Championship.

Now, somewhat following the trend set by the market and the new times, the Toyota Hilux will have the new Hybrid version at its disposal. But be aware: if the Hilux Hybrid is an option for you, you should know that Toyota will only offer it with the double cab body. On the other hand, it will also come with a high level of standard equipment, and with the advantage that it can now carry the ECO label from the DGT.

Getting to the heart of the matter, the new Toyota Hilux Hybrid features the well-known 2,800 cc DOHC diesel engine with 16 valves, capable of delivering 204 CV and 500 Nm of torque, to which a 48 V hybrid system has been fitted. The operation is simple: the combustion engine drives a compact generator motor, which in turn charges the new 48 V battery, which also powers the 12 V system through a new DC/DC converter. Furthermore, with the battery charged, something it does during deceleration and braking phases, it is able to provide an extra 16 CV of power and 65 Nm of torque for greater performance at specific moments.

The compact generator motor has been designed to withstand the heavy workloads generated in a Hilux, while the combustion engine has undergone small changes to adapt to the hybrid system, using a new double-arm belt tensioner along with a more resistant belt. It is worth noting that the Hilux Hybrid, like the Land Cruiser and the Proace range of vehicles, can also run on the HVO100 fuel for which they have been approved.

As I mentioned at the beginning, the new Toyota Hilux Hybrid comes with a generous standard equipment list, highlighting safety and driver-assistance features such as the Toyota Safety Sense technology package, the Toyota Smart Connect system with an eight-inch touchscreen, navigation, connectivity via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, climate control and LED ambient lighting, among others.

The new Toyota Hilux Hybrid does not yet have a price set, which we will learn about later, as its market launch is scheduled for mid-2024.
