Toyota Supra: More details on its return

The new Toyota Supra will be ready next year, 2017, and although there is still not much information on the matter, the Japanese company is dropping small hints about what we can expect from this new generation of the brand’s popular sports car.

For several months now we have been hearing rumours about the arrival of a new Toyota Supra, this time designed with the collaboration of BMW, and it seems those rumours are gradually taking shape. At least, that is what we think after reading some news that appeared in several Japanese specialist media outlets.

It is said, it is reported, it is rumoured, that the new Toyota Supra is taking shape and that it will be available in about three years, with the German manufacturer contributing various elements to make the car a powerful and efficient machine.

The Germans will thus have a successor to the BMW Z4 Roadster, while Toyota will have that new generation of the Supra we are waiting for, both based on the same concept but adapted to the particular characteristics of each brand.

Toyota already has a four-cylinder turbocharged engine, but the one that will equip the new Supra will come from BMW. The Japanese will, for their part, take care of developing the hybrid part of both cars, which will consist of two electric generators, located on each axle, that will harness the kinetic energy from braking to create the electric current that will be stored in a capacitor.

With it, the engine will gain power when accelerating, thus achieving a power output of just over 350 CV. And that is not all, since it will feature two motors with torque vectoring at the front and one on the rear axle, which confirms four-wheel drive.

The transmission will also be supplied by BMW, thus creating two models that will have the best of both companies to offer to the most demanding buyers, with the guarantee that they will have the great strong points of both.

Although nothing is known about the German model, it is suspected that the new Toyota Supra could be based on the Toyota FT-1, the concept that could be seen at the latest Detroit Motor Show and that heads this article. There is still a long way to go before 2017, but surely in the coming months we will have more news on the matter. We will be watching.
