Toyota unveils the electric CH-R SUV for the North American market

The Japanese manufacturer has just announced the upcoming launch, over the course of next year, of the electric version of the popular C-HR. This compact SUV will reach the North American market combining innovation, efficiency and technology, according to the manufacturer itself. Built on the e-TNGA platform, the electric CH-R will offer an estimated EPA range of 467 km (290 miles).

Moving on to its main technical specifications, what we know for now is that it will be fitted with a 74.7 kWh battery pack with lithium-ion cells, paired with two motors -one for each axle- that together will deliver a total of 249 kW of power. This configuration will allow the electric CH-R to reach 60 mph -about 96 km/h- in around 5 seconds.

According to Toyota, the CH-R will come as standard with a battery pack preconditioning system, thanks to which charging times will be reduced in adverse weather conditions with low temperatures. This compact SUV from the Japanese manufacturer will also come as standard with an NACS charging port, in order to make the most of the extensive network of Tesla Superchargers in the North American market. When starting a DC fast charge, Toyota states that it will be able to increase the state of charge from 10 to 80 percent in about 30 minutes. Likewise, the electric CH-R will come as standard with an 11 kW onboard charger for AC charging using a wallbox.

More spacious than it looks at first glance

As for its dimensions, its length will reach 4.52 metres, with a width of 1.87 metres and a height of 1.62 metres. Despite being a compact vehicle, Toyota states that it offers ample cargo space behind the rear seats, with a total of 720 litres. Inside, it will stand out for its high technology level, with a 14-inch touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster, two wireless chargers for mobile devices and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto without cables.

The CH-R also stands out in terms of safety, coming as standard with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 system from the Japanese manufacturer, which includes features such as predictive braking, lane keeping assist, road sign recognition, automatic high beams and proactive driving assist. It also features additional technologies such as traffic jam assist, lane change assist, front cross-traffic alert and safe exit warning. The vehicle also has the Star Safety system, which adds stability and traction control, ABS, electronic brake-force distribution and intelligent stop technology.

Initially, Toyota will sell only two versions of the electric CH-R, named SE and XSE, with optional add-ons available when configuring the vehicle, such as 20-inch wheels, a digital rearview mirror, a panoramic monitor or two-tone paint. Although Toyota has not yet revealed its price, this information is expected to be made public as the start of sales in the North American market approaches next year, 2026.
