Volkswagen could be developing the ID.1: a sporty electric car that would replace the Scirocco

Volkswagen is moving ahead with the expansion of its ID. family, which could soon be joined by the ID.1, the possible successor to the Scirocco.

It is true that the Volkswagen ID.4 is now on everyone’s lips, and it is no wonder, since its debut is just around the corner. However, the German brand has made its intentions to expand the ID. family sooner or later very clear, and it seems the next member will have certain sporty ambitions. Indeed, Volkswagen is already developing what will most likely be named the ID.1, a name that will represent a sporty compact -or city car.

The Wolfsburg-based company issued sad news when it ended production of both the Scirocco and the New Beetle, two models that will have a somewhat different continuation. Volkswagen stated that both vehicles would leave behind their combustion engine status to enter this no longer so new sector under the ID. name.

After the registration of a name that left no room for doubt, there was only some hint about the Scirocco’s successor, and it seems we now have it. The German compact has always positioned itself as a sportier alternative to the Golf, and this seems set not to change with its conversion to electric.

The New Volkswagen Id.4

The final name may not be ID.1 and they may choose something more evocative, but what we are sure of is that Volkswagen plans to fill a spot in its electric family with a very spicy member. With this premise, we can anticipate the arrival of a compact of similar size to the now-retired Scirocco, with a new design language and, of course, a fully electric drivetrain.

As was the case with the Volkswagen Scirocco despite its sporty looks, this hypothetical ID.1 will also come with different engine and battery options. If so, we could be talking about more modest versions designed mainly for urban use. Of course, there would also be room for a higher-capacity, higher-output GTE variant, comfortably exceeding 300 CV as many electric vehicles of similar character already do.

Whatever the case, very important years lie ahead for Volkswagen, which is preparing the ground to welcome a very generous family of electric vehicles. The ID.3 and ID.4 are only the beginning of a saga that will soon have more scope and meaning than ever, occupying virtually every existing segment but with a 100% electric powertrain.
