Volkswagen unveils new logo

Volkswagen used the Frankfurt Motor Show to present its new logo, whose design is only the beginning of the brand’s revolution.

Volkswagen showed at the recent Frankfurt Motor Show that, as a company, it has undergone a radical change compared to what it was a few years ago. This whole change rests, above all, on the new family of electric cars from Volkswagen named ID.

However, for the moment, the only real model of this new generation of the manufacturer’s vehicles is the Volkswagen ID.3, which debuts the new MEB platform. Even so, two novelties are not enough to claim that Volkswagen has changed radically, so they had to think of another change.

That is why the people from Wolfsburg have unveiled a new logo to show that everything has changed. They want to leave behind the “old Volkswagen”, the one that tried to convince people in the early 2000s that its TDI engines were far more efficient than the diesels we were used to. However, what shattered its good reputation in 2015 was the scandal of dieselgate, for which it has been fined 1 billion euros.

After the bombshell that the case represented, Volkswagen clearly had to do something to clean up its image, so it positioned itself as one of the main protagonists in the race towards electrification. It had to produce electric cars and, while at it, debut a new Volkswagen logo.

Although the new range of models clearly looks towards the mobility of the future, the new Volkswagen logo has decided to return to its roots, so it reverts to a flat, two-dimensional design. The company itself has stated that this new image allows for more flexible use and, in addition, will be easier to recognise on digital media.

Since the brand’s first logo, designed in 1930, blue and white have always been used. With the new design presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show, a new shade of blue has been added. Furthermore, the company has revealed the possibility that it will light up on its cars – in the style of the evolution of the legendary BMW kidney grille.

This change of image represents an important step for the Wolfsburg company in every sense, since it will affect its presence in 171 markets. In addition, the brand will have to spend the budget required to replace 70,000 logos across the more than 10,000 facilities the manufacturer has worldwide.

The first car to debut the new Volkswagen logo will be the eighth generation of the Volkswagen Golf. However, the brand will continue to vary its colours depending on the car it is placed on, since on GTI models it will still have red tones, while on electric models they will be blue.

Therefore, the new Volkswagen logo will first arrive at all its European facilities. In October, the novelty will reach China and, in early 2020, it will be applied in North America and South America as well as in the rest of the markets.
