ID.7 Volkswagen Sedans Electric Cars
Volkswagen will ultimately not sell its ID.7 saloon in North America
The Volkswagen ID.7 was officially unveiled in April 2023, and its launch in Europe took place in autumn of that same year. This electric saloon was expected to debut in North America shortly afterwards, but we now know that this will not happen.
According to several German media outlets, Volkswagen has decided to cancel the launch of its ID.7 electric saloon in the North American market, after having previously postponed it. The German manufacturer does not appear to believe that the sales volume this model could achieve in North America would ultimately justify the effort required for its launch there, so the project has finally been cancelled altogether.
In May 2024, Volkswagen postponed the launch of the ID.7 in the United States and Canada indefinitely, and now, according to German media, that postponement is now permanent. Although the German manufacturer has not officially confirmed this cancellation, a company representative reportedly mentioned the complicated situation of the electric vehicle market at present as the main justification for this decision.

This justification is not, however, new. When Volkswagen decided to postpone the launch last May, the company also referred to the situation of the electric vehicle market. That decision caused considerable surprise in the industry, however, as the company had already made preparations to carry out the first deliveries of its electric saloon during the third quarter of 2024, and had even revealed the equipment options available for this model, also announcing the availability of rear-wheel and all-wheel drive versions. It is true that other details, such as the price list or the estimated EPA ranges of each of the versions to be sold, had not been made public.
Direct consequences of the non-commercialisation of the ID.7 in North America
At this point, it is important to note that this change of strategy could end up negatively affecting the Emden plant in Germany, since there were no specific plans to produce the ID.7 for North America, as all units were to be exported from the German plant. There is a possibility that Volkswagen might export the version of the ID.7 produced in China, but given the trade tensions between the United States and China, this possibility seems unlikely.

Sales of the ID.7 in Europe, on the other hand, appear to be growing, with a very good reception also among the public for the estate version of this electric saloon, the ID.7 Tourer. According to a Volkswagen representative, the number of orders registered in January in Europe is in line with the company’s expectations, and is even higher than that of the Passat with a combustion engine.
