Volvo offers an anti-theft tracking system in the United Kingdom

The brand, in collaboration with Vodafone Automotive, has created a stolen car tracking system that for now will only work in the United Kingdom.

One of the greatest concerns of car owners is that a thief may get hold of it and drive it away. New models come with anti-theft protection systems, but car thieves are always one step ahead of the manufacturers. Thus, thieves often use a key signal replication system to access the cabin and start the vehicle.

To improve security in these cases, engineers at Volvo have created a vehicle tracking system for the brand’s cars which can also alert the police if it detects that the driver is not the person at the wheel. This system has been developed together with Vodafone Automotive and has been launched in the United Kingdom, initially as a trial.

Volvo’s anti-theft solution

Volvo and Vodafone have created a tracking system that, via a small card, identifies the driver. If the card is not on board, the Vodafone Automotive system receives a signal and the car tracking process is initiated. An operator contacts the police and can provide the exact location of the vehicle, along with information about it so that it can be recognised immediately.

The system also offers a vehicle locating service, which works within a range of about 10 metres. This can be very useful if the vehicle is some distance from the owner, such as in a car park, where it is easy to become disoriented and fail to find where the car was parked. With this system, the car can be found very easily.

This system, which does not prevent theft but does allow a stolen car to be located quickly, has a price of 576 pounds sterling. This price includes system installation, VAT and a three-year subscription to the system. After that time, the service will have a monthly price.
