The Swedish manufacturer Volvo has decided to expand its range of off-road vehicles, but in a somewhat unusual way. Volvo has been known and appreciated for many years for its Cross Country variants, which have been very well received throughout this time.

However, what we did not expect was that the new member of the Cross Country family would be a conventional saloon, rather than an estate or a compact, as has been the case until now.

But Volvo has decided to take a step forward and become the first manufacturer to market a premium saloon with an off-road character, an adventurous look and specific technical features. This is how the S60 Cross Country comes about, which will be officially presented at the Detroit Motor Show next week.

The exterior of the S60 Cross Country strongly draws attention – an effect the brand intends – thanks to the addition of numerous styling add-ons that make this S60 a unique and original machine. Both the wheel arches and the sill panels have received a new black plastic finish, which further emphasises the adventurous focus of this model. Both bumpers are also specific, featuring a redesigned shape to which metal plate protections are added. The alloy wheels will be available in 18 or 19 inches, always with an exclusive design.

No interior specifications are known yet, but it is likely that specific upholstery and trim will be added, which will further enhance the sense of “adventure” when getting into the car. Technically, we know that the S60 Cross Country sits 65 mm higher than standard S60 models, and that it will be offered in both all-wheel-drive and front-wheel-drive versions. The engines will all be familiar and taken from the current S60 range, including four-cylinder diesel and five-cylinder petrol units, all of them turbocharged.
