What do you think of the illuminated grille of the Renault 4 E-Tech electric?

The illuminated grille of the new Renault 4 E-Tech electric, which pays tribute to the iconic Renault 4 of the 1960s, has been quite a challenge for the brand. Here’s why.

The Renault 4 E-Tech electric arrives to break the mold. It is not only the first model from the brand to feature a new logo, but it also debuts an illuminated grille that marks a before and after. It combines state-of-the-art LED technology with a design that pays tribute to the iconic Renault 4 of the 1960s, creating a connection between the past and the future.

The front of a car can be as expressive as a human face, and Renault knows it. From the round headlights of the original Renault 4 to the modern LED reinterpretation of the E-Tech electric, design remains the star. The illuminated grille of this model is not only a first for the brand but also a global innovation: at 1.45 metres long, this one-piece element takes advantage of the evolution of European lighting regulations to incorporate advanced technology without losing a bit of personality, as I’ll explain.

Taking advantage of regulatory changes

Since June 2023, European regulations have allowed the lighting of elements such as logos and grilles, provided strict requirements are met. The logo must be symmetrical, not exceed 100 cm², have a white, steady and uniform light, and not protrude from the grille. Renault has taken advantage of these new rules to illuminate its iconic diamond and the grille, giving the Renault 4 E-Tech a distinctive look that stands out both by day and by night.

Futurism with nods to the past

Far from falling into retro nostalgia, Renault has opted for a futuristic design that respects the spirit of the original model. The grille, with sculpted motifs and a logo that seems to float, combines minimalism and sophistication. The round lights have been reinterpreted as daytime LEDs, elegantly framing the main lighting modules. At the rear, the capsule-shaped lights also recall those of the classic Renault 4, but with a modern, simplified approach.

A technical challenge overcome

Mass-producing a grille of these dimensions has not been an easy task for the brand. The part is protected against UV rays and condensation, and it has been manufactured with materials that give it lightness and strength to ensure durability without increasing costs. In addition, its transport and assembly posed logistical challenges that Renault overcame successfully.

As for repairability, it has been optimised to ease maintenance: both the grille and the lights can be replaced independently. And to absorb minor knocks, the bumper has been redesigned with modern extensions that guarantee protection without compromising style.
