Sales of electric vehicles plunge by 18.6% in August, figures that put the entire electrified industry in check
The electrified vehicle market in Spain has seen a notable decline in August 2024, reflecting a worrying trend in a sector that is struggling to meet the emissions reduction targets set by the Plan Nacional Integrado de Energía y Clima (PNIEC). Despite efforts to promote the transition to more sustainable vehicles, sales of these models continue to fall, highlighting the challenges the automotive industry faces in adapting to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
Drop in electrified vehicle sales
In August, sales of electrified vehicles, which include both battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, suffered a 18.6% drop, with a total of 6,105 units sold. This decline continues the negative trend observed throughout the year. Year to date, cumulative sales of these vehicles total 75,908 units, representing a 3.4% reduction compared with the same period in 2023.
The electrified vehicle market share in August stood at 9.66%, a decrease of 1.4 percentage points compared with the same month last year. This decline is worrying, as it moves further away from the targets needed to meet CO2 emissions reduction commitments.
Conventional hybrids grow, but do not offset the declines
Despite the fall in electrified sales, non-plug-in hybrid vehicles (ECO label) saw a sales increase of 10.6% during August, reaching 21,345 units registered. These models now account for 33.8% of the monthly market share, consolidating their position as the preferred choice among consumers in the alternative vehicle segment.
However, this growth in conventional hybrids has not been enough to offset the declines in electrified vehicle sales. The figures show that, for the full year to date, sales of non-plug-in hybrid vehicles have accumulated 248,853 units, a 24.4% increase compared with the previous year, with a 30.87% share of the annual total.
The passenger car market
The electrified passenger car market is also showing signs of weakness. In August, sales fell by 17.8%, with 5,706 units sold. This figure represents just 10.91% of the total market, a significant drop compared with the 12.4% recorded in August 2023. So far this year, sales of electrified passenger cars total 69,833 units, a 1.7% decline compared with the same period last year.
On the other hand, the overall passenger car market also contracted in August, with a 6.5% drop and a total of 52,322 units sold. Although the holiday period usually affects sales figures, this August has been particularly weak, slowing annual growth, which now stands only 4.5% above 2023 levels, but still 30% below pre-pandemic levels.
Outlook for the final four months
Despite the negative trend, the National Association of Motor Vehicle and Truck Manufacturers (ANFAC) remains hopeful that the renewal of the MOVES Plan and the new personal income tax deductions for purchasing electrified vehicles could revitalise the market in the last four months of the year. These tax measures could encourage more consumers to opt for battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, helping to recover lost ground and move closer to emissions reduction targets.
Nevertheless, the current situation underlines the need for a concerted effort by both government authorities and industry to overcome the obstacles that hinder faster adoption of sustainable vehicles, thereby ensuring that Spain’s automotive sector remains on the path towards a cleaner and more efficient future.
