Why do engines lose power over time?

Did you know that engines lose power over time? This is due to wear on moving parts and a lack of maintenance.

Motores V8 Toyota (1)

Engines lose power over time because many components make it possible to deliver power. As you probably know, maintenance is essential. The engine is the heart of your car and is made up of many parts lubricated by oil. These parts move at high speed, which causes a certain amount of wear. Over time, the wear on moving parts can gradually reduce power. We’ll help you prevent it.

Below we’ll look at the parts and components that can wear out. To keep your engine from losing power over time, follow the advice we give you and carry out regular maintenance.

Air filter

The air filter is one of those parts you should change often, as it prevents impurities from entering the engine intake. If it is very dirty, the right amount of air won’t reach the engine and it won’t run properly. Consumption will soar, power will drop and driving won’t be pleasant at all. This part costs around 12–15 euros and can save you a lot of trouble.

Fuel filter

Combustible

The purpose of the fuel filter is similar to that of the air filter: it stops impurities from reaching the engine block. If this filter is clogged, you may notice power loss, especially when you demand a bit more from the engine.

Mass airflow sensor

Motor Mecanica9

This part is responsible for measuring the airflow entering the engine. If it doesn’t work properly, you’ll notice the car doesn’t deliver the right performance. The mass airflow sensor works hand in hand with the engine control unit.

Injectors

Inyectores

Injectors are responsible for injecting fuel into the engine. Faults can also come from blockage, impurities, or fuel that has been mixed with water.

Fuel pump

Motor Mecanica2

If the fuel pump is low-pressure, wear will reduce engine power. In addition, avoid driving on reserve, as this could damage the fuel pump.

Turbo

E.turbo Garret

If the turbo isn’t looked after, it may burn oil or lose pressure. If the turbo fails, you’ll notice the car losing power.

Spark plugs

Motor Mecanica1

This part is only fitted to petrol engines. If they are in poor condition, the spark won’t reach the engine and won’t ignite the air-fuel mixture. A faulty spark plug can also create carbon build-up in the combustion chambers. This fault may be linked to the ignition coils: if they wear out, electricity won’t reach the spark plugs.

Catalytic converter

Catalytic converters can become clogged, crack or even burn out. If they don’t work properly, exhaust gases don’t flow freely and the engine can lose strength.

Particulate filter and EGR

Valvula Egr Limpieza Highmotor

This fault usually occurs in diesel cars. The EGR, the exhaust gas recirculation valve, can become blocked, reducing the car’s power. On the other hand, if the particulate filter is very dirty, it can’t do its job and the engine will lose a fair amount of power.
