A world-record-breaking Volkswagen Passat fuel economy

Volkswagen Passat Bluemotion

We hear more than ever about hybrids, electric cars and vehicles running on various fuels, all aiming to move us away from consumerism and our dependence on petrol as soon as possible, while also polluting less. But as things stand, our ties to petrol will last quite a while longer. As long as there are technologies that match hybrids and even surpass them.

And here we have proof of all the above. A Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion has set a world record for fuel economy by running on a single tank of fuel. The Passat in question covered 2,443 kilometres on a journey from Maidstone, England, to the south of France. Of course, it wasn’t enough simply to get there, which would have been easy; it also had to return on the same fuel load.

The Guinness World Records book certified the trip as a fuel economy record, with a result of 2.62 L/100km. That figure surpasses the official figures given by Volkswagen for the Passat: 3.66 L/100km.

According to reports, the driver only maintained an average speed of around 70 km/h throughout the journey. There were no further tricks or secrets, and the car had no special preparation. It was a Passat with a 1.6 TDI engine, just like any Passat you can buy at a dealership.
