Surely Fernando Alonso can’t take his eyes off the Aston Martin DBR22, an exclusive convertible with a V12 engine that pays tribute to some of the brand’s legendary competition models

Q by Aston Martin division has been handling the brand’s most exclusive projects for ten years now. More than enough reason to unveil the new Aston Martin DBR22, which will make its public debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, held during Monterey Car Week in late August. If I were on the jury, I can assure you I would give it a very high mark.

And the truth is that the DBR22 is a truly beautiful car, one that also pays tribute to some of the brand’s two-seater open-top sports cars that earned their place in motor racing history, such as the DBR1 and DB3S, especially at Le Mans.

There’s no need to dwell too much on aesthetic matters. The best thing is for you to look at the images… and seek inspiration in the classic models that accompany the DBR22, a true sculpture on wheels. I’m particularly drawn to the reinterpretation of the grille, made in carbon fibre, or the 21-inch alloy wheels with a single central nut and a design that seeks to recall wire-spoke wheels. And I’m sure you’ve also noticed that spectacular horseshoe-shaped air intake on the bonnet, or the tiny windscreen.

Twin-turbo V12 with 715 CV

Under the front bonnet, the DBR22 hides no less than a 5.2-litre V12 with forced induction via a twin turbocharger. Coupled to an 8-speed automatic gearbox with specific calibration, its peak output reaches 755 CV, with a maximum torque of 753 Nm, and allows the two-seater convertible to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, with a top speed of 319 km/h.

Of course, at Aston Martin they have also paid special attention to everything related to driving dynamics, with a very rigid chassis in which the brand uses 3D printing technology for the first time to manufacture the rear subframe. The goal: to achieve a vehicle that conveys genuine driving pleasure, both on the road and on a circuit, to the point that driving it becomes almost addictive.

Inside the DBR22, carbon fibre is one of the leading materials, both decoratively and structurally, as the seats are made from this material, as are many parts of the bodywork. Q by Aston Martin’s customisation possibilities are almost endless, so that each customer, once the DBR22 moves from concept car to production, something that will happen sooner rather than later, can boast of a truly unique car.
