CES is one of the most important consumer technology fairs in the world, if not the most important. At this event, carmakers also take the opportunity to show the part of technology applied to cars that helps improve driving safety. One of the novelties we will see at CES this year is the digital rearview mirror of Aston Martin, which offers the novelty of displaying images from three cameras installed on the car.

These three cameras will focus on the rear of the car and show everything behind it, avoiding blind spots and allowing the driver to be fully aware of everything happening behind them. This system is installed on a Aston Martin DBS Superleggera.

To achieve this complete view of the rear of the car, the DBS Superleggera features a camera located on the roof of the model, in addition to two cameras discreetly placed on each of the two external mirrors. The image captured by the three cameras appears in the rearview mirror, providing a very complete and safe view while driving.

Although some manufacturers have opted to replace external mirrors with cameras, Aston Martin uses this hybrid system, which keeps mirrors in their normal position, but these include a camera that captures the rear image and improves visibility. Very practical, since although cars such as the Audi e-tron features cameras instead of traditional mirrors, in the United States it cannot yet use this technology.

The problem this poses is the design of two versions, one with traditional mirrors and another with digital cameras. With this hybrid solution, the problem disappears and both technologies can be used without homologation issues. Even if the cameras fail, the rearview mirrors remain useful, so the technology is simply used to improve visibility without fully depending on it. An advantage that could become a standard across the British brand’s models, if it convinces buyers.
