Audi is set to replace its AWD system with the electric e-Quattro system
Audi is counting on its electric e-Quattro drive system being adopted by some of its future models, although there are still some doubts regarding the total weight of the mechanism.

Audi was working on an electric drive system that would eventually replace the well-known Quattro all-wheel drive. The new system, called e-Quattro, consists of an electric motor that will electronically distribute traction to the rear axle and that will have no mechanical connection to the drivetrain.
Eliminating any mechanical link and the absence of a transfer case would considerably improve the possibilities and behaviour of any model fitted with the e-Quattro system, according to the brand’s technical managers, and would also give sufficient flexibility to the design of future models by having fewer mechanical parts. However, it is not as easy as it seems, and there is an even bigger problem.
The main drawback of this system is the weight it would add to the vehicle. The weight of the electric motor itself and of the batteries would have to be taken into account, which could make the e-Quattro drive system a failure.
Nevertheless, Audi is counting on several of its models swapping their all-wheel drive systems for e-Quattro in the future. In fact, both systems will be offered for sale for a prudent period of time, possibly on the A4 and A6 hybrids or not, in about two or three years.
