BMW 518d and BMW 520d, new features for the 5 Series

New developments in the automotive world are constant, because manufacturers know that the moment they stop offering them, competitors will jump ahead and take part of the market. That is why it is normal for the different ranges to need updates so as not to fall behind and to remain attractive enough to stay at the forefront.
This is the case of the 5 Series of BMW, which has just received new engines that significantly improve the specifications of several of the available models. The BMW 518d and the BMW 520d have seen their engine efficiency improve, with consumption and emissions reduced so they can once again be benchmarks in their range.
These two models feature a new four-cylinder, 2.0-litre TwinPower Turbo engine, which delivers 5 kW of extra power with a reduction in consumption of 0.4 litres per 100 km in the EU test cycle, and emissions that are 10 g/km lower.
The figures for the BMW 520d equipped with a 190 CV engine are between 4.3 and 4.7 litres per 100 km, although if it uses the eight-speed Steptronic gearbox these drop to a range between 4.1 and 4.5 litres per 100 km and emissions between 109 and 119 g/km. This difference is determined by the type of tyres fitted.

The entry-level models in the range, the BMW 518d and the BMW 518d Touring, now have a power output of 150 CV and maximum torque of 360 Nm, while in the 190 CV version, fitted to the BMW 520d and the BMW 520d Touring, this rises to 400 Nm, an increase of 20 Nm over the engine previously fitted.
The rear-wheel-drive models have the Steptronic gearbox as an option to the six-speed manual, although it is standard on the all-wheel-drive variants. Other features found on this sixth generation of the 5 Series include electromechanical power steering, a braking energy recovery system and others that improve the efficiency of both models.
