The BMW i4 Concept has been officially presented as a preview of the future BMW i4. This new fully electric model from the Bavarian brand will mark a before and after, as it will be considered the first electric model of the “BMW group in the mid-size premium segment.”

This electric gran coupé will enter production in 2021, and according to the German carmaker itself, “this concept provides a completely new vision of the characteristic dynamic excellence of BMW and combines a modern, elegant and sporty design with the spaciousness and functionality of a four-door Gran Coupé; all while producing zero local emissions.”

The BMW i4 Concept offers a fully electric range of 600 kilometres according to the WLTP homologation cycle and an output that reaches 530 CV. In terms of acceleration, the model is capable of going from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately four seconds. Its top speed? 200 km/h. Nothing to envy from any current BMW M3 or BMW M4!

Domagoj Dukec, Head of BMW Design, added that “the design of the BMW Concept i4 shows fantastic proportions, a powerfully expressive character and, of course, great attention to detail. With BMW’s curved display, we have redefined the focus on the driver in an extremely elegant way. At the same time, the BMW Concept i4 conveys a sense of sustainable driving pleasure. The Concept i4 includes several exterior and interior design elements that will appear both on the BMW i4 and on other production vehicles with electric motors.”

The BMW i4 Concept is characterised by a long wheelbase, a fastback-style roofline, short overhangs and a silhouette that “exudes dynamism and elegance”, as the Bavarian brand itself states. It has four doors, which means a high degree of practicality and usability.

It is finished in an original colour called Frozen Light Copper, in which blue details predominate, paying tribute to the BMW i division. The side mouldings are designed to conceal the battery technology, while the rear is made up of diffusers that improve aerodynamic efficiency.

The wheels, for their part, have been designed exclusively for the BMW i4 Concept. They are smooth and aerodynamically optimised. They also feature ultra-light spokes and high strength.

According to the German brand itself, “the prominent closed kidney grille provides a tangible connection between the past and the future of BMW. This iconic element of BMW also takes on a new function: without a combustion engine requiring cooling, the grille now serves primarily as a ‘smart panel’ housing various sensors. The grille flirts with hidden technology through a special design for this model. The headlights also provide a bridge between past and future, and the classic four-eye front is reinterpreted in a very modern and reduced form. Two complex independent LED optics on each side integrate all the necessary lighting functions. The clean surfaces and sharp lines around the grille create a contemporary front view with considerable visual impact. The blue BMW i accent on the grille frame emphasises the personality of the front design.”

How is the rear of the BMW i4 Concept?

The rear of the new fully electric concept is wide and horizontally emphasised. The L-shaped light units are slim and, in turn, accompany its angular shapes that lead to the air outlets. Instead of exhaust outlets, there are now diffuser elements in BMW i Blue that refer to the BMW i Vision Dynamics.

Turning to the interior and its new interface, drivers will have access to three experience modes called Core, Sport and Efficient. Core “brings to the driver’s area an updated interpretation of the four familiar ‘widgets’ of the current model display concept.” In Sport, “the ‘widgets’ move closer together and create a focused view. Lateral movements behind them are used to show how tight the next bend is, facilitating anticipatory driving. This form of content presentation also allows effective peripheral vision. The area on the right of the screen displays specific functions in a similar way to the BMW M lap timer app.”

Finally, Efficient introduces the “Assisted driving view”, which “shows the driver what the car’s sensors are detecting. This experience mode opens a deeper view into the vehicle’s technology and how it communicates with its environment.”

As the new regulations require, electric cars must emit a sound. BMW was no exception and has installed in its new electric gran coupé a sound that is “its own, visionary and unique”. It was composed by Hans Zimmer, together with BMW’s sound designer Renzo Vitale, under the BMW IconicSounds Electric brand.
