BMW is reportedly planning to drop the V12 engine from the upcoming 760i

The new versions of the BMW 7 Series, the 760i and 760iL models, would no longer feature the 6-litre V12 engine, according to an executive at BMW Australia. The engine downsizing philosophy would also reach the heavyweights of the Munich-based company.

With a few years of history within the BMW range (and about three years on the road for the twin-turbo V12), it seems that the Bavarian brand is considering putting an end to the long road of the V12 engine, in the next generation of the short- and long-wheelbase 760i.

It is well known that manufacturers are currently tending to reduce the number of cylinders in their engines. However, the 6-litre V12 version remained in production exclusively for the small group of 760 customers, with 75 additional horsepower over the V8 of the 750i, though with fuel consumption almost double that of the 750 V8.

The problem for BMW is that it is becoming increasingly difficult to meet the emission levels required in Europe and the USA, which means the brand’s next flagships would no longer be V12s. The rumour was mentioned by an executive at BMW Australia, which is not a source we could call conclusive, but the truth is that the downsizing of almost all sports car and luxury car brands is already a widespread reality.

Even though the Mercedes S-Class has a certain head start in development over the new generation of the 7 Series, BMW expects its rivals to make the first move so it knows what to expect from the new generation due to be presented in 2016.
