Hyundai once again shows that it remains at the forefront of technology, this time by incorporating a digital interior rear-view mirror that works through a camera located at the rear

In a constant struggle and a great effort to raise safety standards in the automotive industry, and to have the best possible technology, Hyundai Motor has taken a step forward by presenting the latest advance in its already award-winning IONIQ 5 model, a model that has won over the most passionate enthusiasts by proving its performance both in adverse weather conditions and on a race track with its 650 CV N version. Now, they have incorporated a revolutionary digital central rear-view mirror (DCM, as it is known in English).

The key element behind this advance is a camera strategically positioned on the rear spoiler of the vehicle, in combination with the DCM. Together, these two components offer a substantial improvement in visibility, giving drivers an panoramic view of the area behind the car without obstructions. What makes this system stand out is its ability to adapt to the driver’s needs. In its standard state, the DCM provides a horizontal rear viewing angle of around 20°, sufficient for everyday manoeuvres.

However, the true potential is unlocked when activating the innovative “digital mode“. Using an intuitive lever located at the base of the mirror, drivers can switch to “digital mode” and expand the viewing angle to the rear to approximately 50°. This is especially useful in situations where a wider view can make the difference between a safe manoeuvre and a much riskier one. In this mode, the rear camera projects a real-time image onto the mirror, ensuring optimal visibility in a variety of driving conditions. In addition, the automatic dimming function adds an extra level of comfort by preventing glare from rear lights at night.

The early production of the 2024 model of the IONIQ 5 is scheduled to begin in August of this year, further consolidating the commitment of Hyundai to innovation and safety. This advance in mirror technology is just one example of how Hyundai constantly seeks to improve the driving experience and provide users with the tools they need to travel with confidence.
