Sustainable mobility has become very important for many cities. Public transport is a significant source of polluting gas emissions in cities, which is why efforts are being made to mitigate its negative impact. Consequently, there are city councils and governments that are promoting the purchase of sustainable, zero-emission vehicles to fulfill their public transport service.

Copenhagen intends to phase out all polluting taxis by 2030, and by 2025 it will no longer grant taxi licenses to vehicles with combustion engines. One of the first steps taken has been awarding the taxi service concession to the company DRVIR, which has added to its fleet 100 Toyota Mirai, powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

These 100 vehicles begin providing taxi service in the city through this company, based on a smartphone app. For some time now, it has offered the service in the city with an interesting range of hybrid, electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles, so the addition of the Toyota Mirai strengthens the offering of zero-emission vehicles.

The taxi sector is one of the most interested in betting on sustainable mobility, including hydrogen-powered vehicles. These types of vehicles are very attractive since they only emit water vapor and help reduce urban pollution.

Several programs are being carried out in Europe to promote this type of mobility and the use of cars with hydrogen fuel cells. Hydrogen Mobility Europe 2 (H2ME2) and Zero Emission Fleet Vehicles For European Rollout (ZEFER). The collaboration between these two projects and The Hydrogen And Fuel Cell Joint Undertaking (FCH JU), in which the Copenhagen city council participates, Toyota and the hydrogen sector has made this agreement possible.

The hydrogen infrastructure in Denmark has grown considerably in recent months, and thanks to this, these hydrogen fuel cell taxis are able to operate. A starting point toward the full electrification of the service, whether with battery vehicles or with this clean fuel.
