CUPRA Ateca 2.0 TSI: is it worth paying almost 10,000 euros more for the VZ?

It’s a seasoned model, but the CUPRA Ateca is still one of the most interesting sporty SUVs, especially now with the arrival of the new 190 CV 2.0 TSI version, which lowers the price by almost 6,000 euros compared to the Ateca VZ

The VZ version of the CUPRA Ateca, with its 300 CV, is quite a “temptation”, even though we’re talking about a model that is already a veteran. But its list price of 56,000 euros puts you off. However, the arrival of the new 2.0 TSI DSG 4Drive version, with 190 CV, has once again put the CUPRA Ateca in the spotlight for everyone looking for a sporty SUV not only in appearance, but also when it comes to driving it… and with a list price almost 10,000 euros lower.

I must say that the 2.0 TSI, in this 190 CV version, is an engine I love for its smooth operation, its balance between performance and consumption, and how well it pairs with the DSG dual-clutch gearbox. But… is it enough for a model like the CUPRA Ateca, from which you expect sporty performance? In my opinion it wouldn’t be if the VZ weren’t in the range, far more forceful in its response and clearly faster: it reaches 250 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, while the 190 CV 2.0 TSI reaches “only” 212 km/h and needs 3.2 seconds more to reach 100 km/h from a standing start. Okay, these are still respectable figures, but the Ateca VZ is in another league…

Not just performance: look at the equipment

So is the CUPRA Ateca 2.0 TSI 190 CV worth it, with 110 CV less than the “powerful” VZ? In my opinion, yes… as long as what you’re looking for is an SUV with a good balance between sportiness, ease of use and comfort for everyday driving.

But if you’ve set your sights on the CUPRA Ateca looking for sportiness, dig deep and choose the VZ. Yes, it’s much more expensive. But the VZ isn’t just 110 extra CV. It also offers additional standard equipment that must be taken into account. Take note: aluminium pedals, four-outlet exhaust, Dark Chrome colour badges, electric tailgate, 360-degree camera, launch control, progressive steering, adaptive chassis control, wireless phone charger, automatic high beams, Travel Assist… Oh! And you can fit the Akrapovic exhaust, although the price is staggering: almost 4,000 euros.
