DS Automobiles will withdraw from Formula E at the end of this season
DS Automobiles closes a successful and pioneering chapter in Formula E, handing the baton to Opel, which will debut in the 2026/27 season.
DS Automobiles has announced its departure from Formula E at the conclusion of the current 2025/26 season, ending an eleven-year journey in the world championship for electric single-seaters. The French brand of the Stellantis group has decided to redirect its sporting and technological strategy towards new horizons.
Since its debut in the 2015/16 season, DS Automobiles has been one of the most prominent and successful brands in the history of Formula E. Over all these years, the French brand has won four world championships – two drivers’ and two constructors’ titles -, achieved 18 victories and 55 podiums, and also secured 26 pole positions alongside various teams. These results consolidate its legacy as one of the most decorated manufacturers in the category.

According to Stellantis’ official statement, this evolution responds to the desire to explore new avenues of technological innovation, which will lead it to focus on high-speed sailing competition through its alliance as main sponsor of the DS Automobiles SailGP Team France team, an agreement formalised in January 2026.
Sailing competition, particularly with SailGP’s F50 catamarans, presents itself as an ideal laboratory for researching aspects such as advanced aerodynamics, drag reduction, lightweighting through cutting-edge composite materials and the development of sophisticated software. These areas share clear synergies with the world of electric and high-performance automobiles, allowing it to reach new goals, since the brand acknowledges that it has already transferred much of the knowledge acquired in Formula E to its production vehicles.
Goodbye DS Automobiles, hello Opel
Despite DS leaving as a brand, Stellantis will maintain a strong presence in Formula E. The group is already represented through Citroën, which returned this season occupying the slot left by Maserati, and now, following the withdrawal of DS Automobiles, will bring in Opel as a new official participant.

Just one day after the announcement of DS, it was confirmed that Opel will debut in the 2026/27 season (the start of the Gen4 era) with the Opel GSE Formula E Team, which will compete for four years with two single-seaters. Formula E will thus continue to count on Stellantis’ involvement, although with a change of protagonist in one of its slots.
