Dunlop is launching a new technology that significantly reduces the interior noise of cars. The technology is called “Noise Shield” and is based on a foam layer located inside the tyre that helps reduce the vibration of the air within it.

Dunlop has just announced the launch of a new foam-based technology that significantly reduces the interior noise of cars. This advance makes it possible to make out more of the roar of the engine and reduces the overall cabin noise by up to 4 decibels.

This new technology is called “Noise Shield” and reduces the noise inside the car generated by the Tyre Cavity Resonance (TCR).

The noise generated by TCR is produced by the vibration of the air inside the tyre as it travels along the road, which is transmitted to the vehicle’s interior structure. Dunlop’s Noise Shield technology is based on a foam layer located inside the tyre, thereby reducing the vibration of the air within it.

This technology dampens the sound peak of the TCR inside the tyre itself, which is reduced by up to 11 decibels, making the vehicle cabin quieter at every speed. In addition, Audi asked Dunlop to develop this technology for some of its sportiest models, such as the RS6, the RS7 and the new A8.

The on-road performance of the tyre and its speed capabilities are not affected, thanks to its advanced foam structure being very lightweight. Furthermore, since the foam is an integral part of the tyre, it does not lose its ability to reduce noise levels under normal conditions of use.

Noise Shield technology is currently available on these vehicles as standard equipment:

  1. Audi RS6: Sport Maxx GT – 285/30ZR21(100Y) XL and WinterSport 4D – 285/30ZR21 100W XL.
  2. Audi RS7: WinterSport 4D – 275/30R21 98W XL
  3. Audi A8: Sport Maxx GT – 275/35ZR21 103Y XL
