Engine oil: don't forget to check it frequently, it's more important than you think

One of the most important elements of the engine is the oil, which ensures the proper lubrication of the moving parts so that they work correctly.

We do it almost without thinking about it. Every 15,000 or 30,000 kilometres, depending on the type used, the engine oil must be changed. We know it is important and that without it the engine does not run well. But do we really understand how important this lubricant is and what it does in the engine? Let’s review its functions so you can know them well.

What is engine oil?

Engine oil is the liquid that lubricates combustion engines. There are several types, and each one is suited to different kinds of engines. You need to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to know exactly which type of lubricant is recommended for each engine. Using an unsuitable engine oil can damage the engine and cause serious breakdowns, so make sure you know which one is the right one.

What is the function of engine oil?

We already know that its job is to lubricate the engine’s mechanical parts. That is, it forms a film around the parts and helps them move without friction, preventing them from wearing out or being damaged. But engine oil also performs a cleaning function, since it removes carbon deposits that can settle on the engine parts. Another of its functions is to slow down corrosion and reduce the temperature of moving parts.

Why is it so important?

If the oil runs out, the various moving parts of the engine will start rubbing against each other and may be damaged. Constant friction between these parts can lead to breakage and serious problems, to the point of causing breakdowns and ruining the engine.

It is important to check the oil level fairly often. It is measured with a dipstick located in the engine. It must be pulled out and wiped clean so that the reading is not wrong. Once the dipstick is clean, it must be reinserted all the way and then pulled out again. At the tip there are two marks, minimum and maximum. The oil mark must be between these two values. Better still, of course, if it is closer to the maximum level.

If for any reason there is too little oil, you must open the oil filler cap and top up with the right amount. Remember to do this when the engine is cold and let it rest for a few minutes so the oil can settle. After about 5 minutes, check the level with the dipstick.

If the car regularly loses oil, take it to the workshop to find out where the problem is, even if it is not yet time to change the oil level. It is important that the level stays between the minimum and maximum marks to avoid engine damage. And remember something important: an old car burns oil faster than a new one, so it will need more frequent level checks.

Engine oil is essential for the engine to run well, so remember to check its condition and quantity several times a year to avoid surprises and serious breakdowns.
