Ford announces an all-wheel-drive version of the E-Transit Custom

The E-Transit Custom AWD is presented as an attractive option for all those seeking an electric commercial vehicle capable of tackling challenging terrain without sacrificing efficiency or capacity.

Ford Pro has just unveiled a new all-wheel-drive version of the E-Transit Custom electric van, whose launch is scheduled for spring 2026. This new model promises to substantially expand the capabilities of the rear-wheel-drive version we already know, to meet the needs of all customers who require a higher level of stability in all kinds of weather conditions.

The E-Transit Custom AWD will add an additional electric motor on the front axle, which will complement the one integrated into the rear axle in the conventional version. According to Ford, this configuration with two independent drive units will optimise the distribution of torque to all four wheels, improving traction on steep gradients and on slippery surfaces such as ice or mud. This design aims to enhance the vehicle’s performance in demanding environments, offering more stable and safer driving even in extreme conditions.

Ford has not yet wished to share specific data on the performance of the AWD system, but has committed to doing so in the near future as the official launch date approaches. The North American manufacturer has nevertheless taken the opportunity to highlight its intention to offer, with this new model, a solution for all E-Transit Custom customers who travel over more challenging terrain. With particular reference to those located in regions such as the Nordic countries or mountainous areas such as the Alps, where cold, snow and ice pose an additional risk.

Technical specifications of the E-Transit currently on sale

The current rear-wheel-drive version of the E-Transit Custom is equipped with a 64 kWh NMC battery pack, paired with a single electric motor on the rear axle, offered with three power levels: 100 kW, 160 kW and 210 kW. Ford promises for this version a maximum range of 337 km under the WLTP homologation cycle, with a maximum supported charging power of 125 kW. Thus, according to the manufacturer, it is possible to increase the state of charge from 10 to 80 percent in around 39 minutes when using a DC fast-charging point.

It is also worth mentioning that, regarding its transport capabilities, this version has a payload capacity of up to 1,011 kg, a cargo volume of up to 6.8 cubic metres, and is also capable of towing up to 2.3 tonnes.

Finally, we should recall that the E-Transit Custom serves as the basis for the e-Transporter of the commercial vehicles division of Volkswagen, a model with very similar technical characteristics. Both vehicles not only share technology, but are also manufactured jointly in Turkey, so it should come as no surprise that in the coming weeks or months the German manufacturer also announces an equivalent 4MOTION version.
