Ford would be investigating alternative diesel, electric and hybrid powertrains for the Mustang

Have you ever imagined that a Ford Mustang could be diesel? Or electric? Some of these alternatives could become a reality, according to the conclusions reached by Ford’s engine department. And given the different markets the Mustang will be aimed at, tests are being carried out with diesel, hybrid and electric engines.
Of course, these tests do not necessarily mean that a diesel Mustang will exist. But before the pony car fans pull their hair out, it should be said that fuel economy and emissions laws have forced the search for some alternatives, according to Ford. One of them is clear: the adoption of the 2.3 EcoBoost engine. The others could be close.
There are some truly interesting theories, such as adding an electric motor to the Mustang’s V8; in this case, the gain for the Mustang would not be on the side of economy, but on the side of performance, the same path taken by some sports models from other brands. Others would be the use of electric motors specific to the front or rear wheels, which would give the Mustang a major improvement in dynamic handling.
What does seem clear is that these ideas would be developed with an eye on Europe, where the Mustang’s prestige as a muscle car with a V8 engine is not as strong as in the USA. I don’t know whether a diesel would have a place in America (unless it were a high-performance turbo diesel), but the truth is that what has been reported today about the Mustang is one of the strangest news items of the year.
